Insurers not forthcoming
In a quotation survey of 12 mainstream insurance outlets last week only 1 (Aviva) was entirely up front with details of its 'penalty' excess for policyholders choosing their own repairer in the event of an accident. Of the others NONE volunteered any information about contractual compunction to use their network repair shops-or higher excesses-and when asked the question only 2 knew the correct answers without reference to a higher authority. For those who were Brokers this may be excusable as they have many policies to choose from but for those who were insurers call centres there really is no excuse. All quotes were by telephone as this writer WILL NOT buy an insurance product through the internet (far too dangerous a proposition as it is all black and white with no grey areas that can be referred back to a recorded telephone conversation. Some internet policies (eg Hastings) are different to their telephone offerings often offering different (poorer) policy trerms to compete on the holy grail of cheap prices).
